Bence-Jones Protein (IFE) and Reflex Protein Electrophoresis, Urine

Test ID: BENCEJ

Test

Aliases/Synonyms

UBJ; UPE; Bence Jones protein

Method

Immunofixation (with reflex protein electrophoresis if Bence-Jones proteins are detected)

Report Includes

Free Kappa Light Chains; Free Lambda Light Chains; Protein; Albumin; Alpha-1 Globulin; Alpha-2 Globulin; Beta Globulin; Gamma Globulin; M-Spike

Specimens

Random Urine; 24h Urine

Clinical Utility

Urine Bence-Jones (BJ) by immunofixation is more specific for Bence-Jones proteins than protein electrophoresis (PE).
Eliminating initial PE screening enables shorter laboratory turnaround time and faster final reports.
Quantitating detected BJ proteins allows longitudinal monitoring, rather than merely indicating their presence or absence.

Reported when protein electrophoresis is performed.
Interpretation Quantitative estimation of Bence-Jones protein is reported when protein electrophoresis is performed.
24 hour Urine: Bence-Jones protein is reported as both percentage of total protein and absolute quantity (g/d and/or g/L).
Random Urine: Bence-Jones protein is reported as the percentage of total protein.
