Position: Medical Laboratory Technologist – Fecal Immunochemical Testing (FIT)
Employment Type: Contract, Part-Time hours (up to 22.5 hours bi-weekly)
Term: Fixed-term contract until June 30, 2029 (with possibility of extension based on business needs and performance)
Compensation: $33–$38 per hour, commensurate with experience, plus 4% vacation pay.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a Medical Laboratory Technologist to join our team to support Fecal Immunochemical Testing (FIT). This role plays a key part in screening for colorectal cancer and improving patient outcomes by ensuring the accurate and timely processing of FIT specimens.

Key Areas of Responsibility

  • Maintain and calibrate laboratory instruments; prepare reagents and supplies.
  • Perform calibrations and quality control and approve calibrations and quality control results.
  • Perform FIT specimen testing and approve test results and device rejections.
  • Troubleshoot instrumentation issues and liaise with vendors.
  • Follow Standard Operating Procedures and escalate testing or reporting issues as needed.
  • Liaise with healthcare providers, participants and vendors.
  • Participate in quality management, safety procedures, and regulatory compliance.
  • Oversee MLA staff, provide technical guidance and mentorship.
  • Cover MLA duties when required, including accessioning and assessing specimens.

Hands-on Experience Needed to Excel in This Role

  • Performing analytical testing and quality control in a clinical laboratory.
  • Working with laboratory instrumentation, analyzers, and LIS systems.
  • Preparing reagents, calibrating instruments, and performing troubleshooting
  • Handling and processing clinical specimens according to Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Managing high-volume workflows with strict turnaround times.
  • Participating in quality management and regulatory compliance activities.
  • Mentoring laboratory support staff.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in Medical Laboratory Science.
  • Registration as a Medical Laboratory Technologist (CMLTO).

Experience:

  • Experience in Chemistry or Haematology, including Quality Control review.
  • Experience overseeing laboratory support staff is an asset.
  • Experience in complex work processes.
  • Experience in a fast-paced clinical laboratory environment is preferred.

Additional Requirement

  • Ability to perform tasks requiring manual dexterity, including instrument operation and troubleshooting.
