Position: Medical Laboratory Assistant – Fecal Immunochemical Testing (FIT)
Employment Type: Contract, Full-Time hours (75 hours bi-weekly)
Term: Fixed-term contract until June 30, 2029 (with possibility of extension based on business needs and performance)
Compensation: $22–$26 per hour, commensurate with experience, plus 4% vacation pay.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a Medical Laboratory Assistant to join our team to support Fecal Immunochemical Testing (FIT). This role plays a key part in screening for colorectal cancer and improving patient outcomes by ensuring the accurate and timely processing of FIT specimens.

Key Areas of Responsibility

  • Review orders and enter data into the Laboratory Information System.
  • Receive, accession, and track specimens.
  • Assess, sort, and prepare specimens for testing.
  • Manage specimen storage and disposal.
  • Prepare reagents and maintain lab equipment.
  • Perform calibration and quality control.
  • Perform testing following quality control approval.
  • Monitor inventory and supplies.
  • Communicate with providers and participants
  • Follow Standard Operating Procedures, safety standards, and quality procedures.

Hands-on Experience Needed to Excel in This Role

  • Data entry in a laboratory or healthcare setting.
  • Specimen handling.
  • Use of laboratory instrumentation
  • Performing basic quality control procedures and instrument maintenance.
  • Working with Laboratory Information Systems and standard office software.
  • Managing high-volume workflows with strict turnaround times.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) or
  • Bachelor of Science or related degree (e.g., Health Sciences or similar field). New grads will be considered.

Experience:

  • Experience in a healthcare or laboratory support environment is an asset.
  • Experience with specimen handling, data entry, or clinical/administrative support is an asset.
  • Experience working with Laboratory Information Systems or other computer systems is an asset.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, high-volume environment is an asset.

Key Competencies

  • Fluency in French (verbal and written) is preferred.
  • Proficiency with computer systems, such as Laboratory Information Systems.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Knowledge of and adherence to safety protocols.
  • Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to work effectively under direct supervision and in a team.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to multitask and prioritize.
  • Reliable, punctual, and accountable in completing tasks.

  • Customer service–oriented with a professional and courteous approach.
  • Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion.

Additional Requirement

  • Ability to perform tasks requiring manual dexterity, including the use of both hands for data entry and specimen handling (bona fide occupational requirement).
