Below are answers to FAQs about how to receive FIT results:
Completing the form at iclabs.ca/FIT/reports does not mean that FIT results will be available in OntarioMD-certified EMRs by July 1, 2026.
Ontario Health (Cancer Care Ontario) is working with OntarioMD-certified EMR vendors to make FIT results available directly in these EMRs. OntarioMD-certified EMRs are developing a “practitioner query” function that, once available, will automatically pull the Ontario Laboratories Information System (OLIS) results into EMRs at timed intervals. Because not all OntarioMD-certified EMR vendors will offer this functionality at launch, FIT results will be sent by fax in the interim.
Completing the online form means that In-Common Laboratories (ICL) will note your preference to receive FIT results via EMR over fax. When this functionality is available with your OntarioMD-certified EMR, ICL will contact you to confirm EMR reporting is available and will stop sending faxes.
Please note that, along with fax, all results will be available in OLIS.
In-Common Laboratories (ICL) will retain your result reporting preferences and switch your reporting method from fax to OntarioMD-certified electronic medical record (EMR) once the practitioner query functionality is available in your EMR. ICL will notify you when this happens using the contact information you provided through the form.
Until your OntarioMD-certified EMR offers this functionality, you will receive FIT results by fax and through the Ontario Laboratories Information System (OLIS) starting July 1, 2026. If you have further questions, please contact Ontario Health (Cancer Care Ontario).
Please send us an email detailing the error you are experiencing to fit@iclabs.ca. A member of the In-Common Laboratories (ICL) Fit Support Team will look into your concern.
If you would like to submit OntarioMD-certified EMR reporting preferences for multiple providers (e.g., an entire practice), you can send the following information to fit@iclabs.ca as a Word or Excel document:
- Provider name
- Provider type (Physician, Nurse Practitioner)
- CPSO/CNO Number
- Phone number
- Fax number
- Email address
- Full practice address with suite or unit number
- The OntarioMD-certified EMR used by the providers
Contact your vendor to find out whether you can receive fecal immunochemical test (FIT) results via your EMR.
If you have not submitted a FIT requisition to LifeLabs in the past two years or ICL had to confirm your fax number, you will need to complete a one-time short fax verification step to get FIT results. If fax verification is not complete, FIT results will only be available in the Ontario Laboratories Information System (OLIS).
The steps to complete fax verification are:
- Watch for the verification form ICL will fax to you, and
- Sign the form and fax it back to ICL at the number provided on the verification form
Fax verification is important in ensuring patients’ FIT results are sent to the appropriate fax line.
Please note, ICL will still mail FIT kits even if fax verification is pending.
In-Common Laboratories (ICL) will send participants’ FIT results in the Ontario Laboratories Information System (OLIS) and a direct reporting method of your choice (i.e. fax or mail).
OntarioMD-certified EMRs are developing a “practitioner query” function that, once available, will automatically pull OLIS results into EMRs at timed intervals. Because not all OntarioMD-certified EMR vendors will offer this functionality at launch, FIT results will be sent by fax in the interim.
To change your FIT reporting preferences to mail, please email ICL’s FIT Support Team (fit@iclabs.ca) with your mailing address. If you have any questions, please call ICL at 1-833-FIT-POOP (1-833-348-7667).
If you work as a locum or work at multiple locations and use multiple electronic medical records (EMRs), please fill out one form per location.
