Patient Preparation

The following foods and medications should be avoided for three (3) days prior to the collection of urine, and during the collection of the sample:
Foods containing high caffeine concentrations (e.g. coffee, tea, cocoa, chocolate, caffeinated beverages, foods containing high amine concentrations (e.g. bananas, avocados, cheese, walnuts, alcohol, fruit and juices) and foods containing vanilla can increase urinary HVA/VMA excretion. Essential hypertension, intense anxiety and intense physical exercise can also result in raised HVA/VMA excretion.
Medications and drugs such as Salicylate, Histamine, Acetaminophen, Levodopa, Ajmaline, Lithium, Epinephrine, Nitroglycerin, Glucagon, Rauwolfia Alkaloids and Guanethidine can increase HVA/VMA.
Contact your physician for approval before discontinuing any prescription medication. Be sure to discuss all non-prescription medications with your physician.
