Clinical Utility

The Anti Saccharomyces cerevisiae Antibodies may be clinically useful in the evaluation of suspected Inflammatory Bowel Disease including Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. ASCA are reported to be significantly more prevalent in Crohn’s Disease than in Ulcerative Colitis or Normal Individuals. The ASCA have also been reported positive in some patients with other autoimmune diseases including Celiac Disease. The inflammatory bowel disease’s (Crohn’s Disease, Ulcerative Colitis) are chronic remitting disorders with an unpredictable course and variable response to therapy. The diagnosis of the inflammatory bowel diseases is based on clinical, radiological, endoscopic and histological findings. Immunological, environmental, infectious and genetic factors have been postulated to increase the risk for developing IBD. The ASCAs are directed against phosphopeptidomannans present in yeast cell walls. ASCA may be elicited due to molecular mimicry and priming by a high dose mannose containing bacteria, viral antigen or an auto antigenic molecule.
