Bence-Jones Protein (IFE) and Reflex Protein Electrophoresis, Urine
Test Overview
Clinical Utility
Urine Bence-Jones (BJ) by immunofixation is more specific for Bence-Jones proteins than protein electrophoresis (PE).
Eliminating initial PE screening enables shorter laboratory turnaround time and faster final reports.
Quantitating detected BJ proteins allows longitudinal monitoring, rather than merely indicating their presence or absence.
Method
Immunofixation Electrophoresis (IFE)

Collection & Handling
Collection Instructions
Submit an aliquot of a random collection (first morning void preferred) or an aliquot of a 24-hour preservative-free urine collection.
Handling Information
Store and send frozen.
Additional Information
If Bence-Jones proteins are detected, protein electrophoresis will be performed, reported and billed.

Interpretation
Comment
Quantitative estimation of Bence-Jones protein is reported when protein electrophoresis is performed.
24 hour Urine: Bence-Jones protein is reported as both percentage of total protein and absolute quantity (g/d and/or g/L).
Random Urine: Bence-Jones protein is reported as the percentage of total protein.
